At Waggin’ Wheelz Vet we pride ourselves on being stewards of both human and animal health and safety, as they are so often intertwined. As situations evolve and new information emerges, we adjust our protocols to meet the best interest of both our patients and clients. We recently learned that the drug Praziquantel, used to treat tapeworms specifically, is becoming increasingly resistant in large animal populations. It is only a matter of time until we see this in our domestic pets as well. In an effort to get ahead of this drug resistance, we have changed our approach to deworming! We now recommend ruling out the presence of intestinal parasites via fecal samples, and using a targeted approach for treatment, only treating with Praziquantel when tapeworms are present.
